Jus in bello 2010
Even if my journal is friends only for the most part, this is something I want to share publicly. This is not a full con report, though. Mainly, it's about the Roman holiday, Jensen's singing and an outlet for all the pent-up emotions of this weekend.

Soooo Jus in bello con. I remember when the news about the Italian con first came out, most people - myself included - were really really sceptic about a con being held in a non-english speaking country. How was that even supposed to work? But what has always really appealed to me in regards to this con was the fact that it was being held on Easter. Whenever I had doubts about the con, I told myself "Hey, you're gonna spend Easter weekend with Jared and Jensen." So that special date they picked has always been a big plus in my book. I would have never expected, though, that this was going to become the most memorable Easter of my life. And I'm not even exaggerating.

Roman Holiday

I had booked the Roman Holiday tour with Misha and Richard, which was taking place on Friday morning. After some confusion about registration for the tour, for the con, for everything and nothing at once, 26 fans - myself included - were impatiently and excitedly sitting on the bus, waiting for the tour to begin. Everybody was making guesses about where we thought we were going and where Misha and Richard would join the group. You can imagine the surprised "Ooohs" and "Aaahhs" when Misha, Richard AND Traci got onto the same bus their fans were already on. It was quite funny because when we saw them approach the bus, everybody was all giddy and giggly, but once they set foot onto the bus, everybody was quiet, saying a polite "Good morning" and pretending like nothing out of the ordinary was going on lol.

Our destination turned out to be a former Roman city called "Ostia Antica", which was built about 7 BC. Our guide Angela showed us around the ruins and I felt like being on a school trip all over again, just with slightly more exciting company than back in the day. XD In the beginning, everybody was still being very shy and reserved, but the longer the tour took, the more people started to chat with the actors about pretty much all kinds of stuff. I didn't get to talk to Misha a whole lot, because he was being surrounded by fans all the time. I just quickly exchanged some words with him about the huge old water pipes there and the lead poisoning they must have caused.

One of the sweet German girls I met there had brought some original Haribo gummy bears and Misha liked them a lot. So much so, that he stole them from her, when she had her back turned to him. At some point, the girls and me wanted to have our photo taken together, so Richard took one for us, without us asking him to. That was really very sweet. Anyways, I got to talk to Richard a bit about Rome and Vancouver and my job, as he was interested to know what I was doing for a living, and I also talked to Traci a bit about her stay in Rome.

Throughout the tour, we took some group pictures of all of us together, which I am really looking forward to see. Especially the one in the amphitheater. At the end of the tour, a girl asked Misha about getting a picture taken of him with a friend of hers. She was really shy, though, so when he walked towards her she stepped back a bit and he grinninly said "Yeah well, I'm trying to approach her but she's walking away." They did take their picture eventually, and I couldn't resist asking for one too. Which he agreed on, as well. And I like that one better than the photo op.

When we were back on the bus, I got to talk to Misha about the documentary Loot which he co-produced, and he said it didn't do very well on European festivals, only got accepted for one or two. He thought that's probably because it's a very American story but said it would come out on DVD eventually.

In conclusion, the Roman holiday was, of course, too short, but a lot of fun. When I was younger, I wanted to become an archeologist, so wandering ancient ruins is always exciting to me. Even more so, when actors from my favorite TV show are coming along. So that was definitely a great start to a great weekend.

Jensen's surprise performance

The Jason and Jensen panel. My goodness. Just thinking about it makes my heart beat faster. From where I was sitting, I was looking right at the door where the actors were coming in for their panels. And when the door opened about half a minute before Jason and Jensen came on stage, I saw Jason standing there with his guitar case. And all I could think of was "No. It can't be. This can't mean what I think it means. It can't." So they came on stage and Jason very non-chalantly set the guitar case on the floor. Being a musician and all. Wink The Q&A started and most questions were being directed at Jensen anyway, but it was great to see how he tried to include Jason into the talk or how Jason added his own input and never seemed out of place or anything. Every now and then, I peaked at the guitar case but always dismissed the crazy little spark of hope that was immediately building each and every time.

As usual, time was flying and suddenly, it was already time for the last question. And the girl having the chance of asking the very last question of the con just flat out asked "Can you sing something for us?" Which is a question he had been asked the day before. All around me I heard the annoyed sounds of disapproval and I didn't really approve of the question either. I was worried that even if he had planned on singing, that question would throw him off again. But Jensen just started laughing and said "We don't have anything to sing with". Of course, half of the people pointed at the guitar on the floor and he was like "That's not a guitar." Well I guess you can just look on youtube what exactly was going on, since there's a gazillion videos of that scenario. By the time Jensen started teasing about the guitar, I was pretty sure he was gonna sing. I would have loved to have somebody measure my pulse that moment, because I thought my heart was going to jump out my breast from excitement. One could tell he was really nervous about it, and the atmosphere in the room, which had been laden with excitement all weekend, was even more so.

I really could not believe what I was seeing. When Jensen started to sing, I was completely taken aback by the fact that he was not just singing back-up on this song. And I didn't expect his voice to sound like that at all. Completely different to the back-up voice of Crazy Love. I felt a lump building in my throat, felt the tears rise to my eyes and just thought "No crying. I wanna see this, not have blurry vision." I also only took about 10 pictures and then put the camera down to just watch Jensen sing. The lady sitting next to me looked at me halfway through the song, her eyes all teary-eyed, just shaking her head in disbelief. And all I could do was nod my head just as disbelievingly. I am not exaggerating when I say it was surreal to watch Jensen sing and play the guitar in front of us. Which he had refused to do so many times before. It felt like such a special thing, like his very personal "thank you" to us. And even if there were a couple of hundred people in the room, it was an incredibly intimate moment each and everyone of us was sharing with Jensen.

When the song was over, I couldn't even cheer, the lump in my throat was so big. I just clapped and kept watching how he threw the guitar in the air, folded his hands, did the \m/ and fist pump and left the stage. I was still completely in awe and looked around the room, just to find girls crying, lying in each others arms, sending texts or beaming with excitement. It was such an intense moment and I was happy I could just stay for myself for a minute or two cause I think that my voice would have given in on me if I had had to say something that moment.

People left the auditorium and each and every girl I talked to was pretty much speechless. The most frequent response I got was "I feel like I'm floating". And that pretty much describes it perfectly. I guess all of this probably sounds pretty lame for someone who wasn't there, but it was a moment filled with so much emotion that it still makes my heart flutter to think about it. The endorphines rushing through our bodies must have multiplied times a billion with that little gift Jensen had given us.

In conclusion

Overall, the con was a big success. Of course, there were some things that still need improvement. But it was the organizers' first con, and they learned quickly from one day to the next. My main complaint is still that the staff did not speak English well enough for an international event like this. That's certainly something that needs improvement. But they really tried to help people sorting things out. Misha's agent Julie also played a big part in that. She was helping out wherever she could, and was vital to the con's success. So even if she will never read this, thanks for everything Julie!

I also loved how respectful most of the fans treated the actors. When they were walking by somewhere, most people just watched or took a picture from afar, but nobody ran up to them, screamed into their faces or jumped them. Everybody was keeping their distance and respecting privacy and personal space. And having the actors stay in the same hotel, mingling with the fans if they wanted to, and also being left alone if they wanted to be, made everything feel very amicable, or even familial. So a big compliment to the fans, they were behaving wonderfully. Especially considering that the con had a remarkable small number of restrictions and rules. They weren't strict with the photo ops or the queuing, yet most people stuck to their common sense and made this work on its own. Seriously, even if it sounds stupid, I felt a lot of respect among the fans, too, which was great.

And what's even more remarkable, considering that Europeans tend to identify themselves a lot with their homecountry and the whole idea of the entire continent feeling united as one is not really established in people's minds, I felt very European at this con. And I'm really proud that we as (mostly) Europeans were such a nice bunch of supportive, appreciative and enthusiastic fans, who were there to celebrate their favorite show together. I love Jim Beaver for acknowledging multiple times that this was actually not simply an Italian convention but a European one. Who knew that a TV show could be so uniting. <3
